About Monitor Test Patterns
SMPTE color bars are the industry standard test pattern for calibrating video monitors and displays. Developed by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, these patterns help technicians verify color accuracy, brightness levels, and display geometry.
The 75% color bar standard uses reduced intensity colors to prevent signal clipping in broadcast workflows. For display testing, both 75% and 100% patterns are useful - 75% for broadcast monitoring and 100% for checking full gamut reproduction.
The PLUGE (Picture Line-Up Generation Equipment) pattern is essential for setting correct black levels. Adjust your monitor brightness until the middle bar (0%) is barely distinguishable from the super-black bar (-4%), while the +4% bar remains visible.
